India launches its first sounding rocket — a Nike-Apache borrowed from NASA — from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station. The nose cone arrives by bicycle. Dr Vikram Sarabhai's vision becomes real. India is in space.

Indian Space Research Organisation established on August 15, 1969 — Independence Day. Dr Vikram Sarabhai becomes the first chairman. His vision: space not for prestige but for development.

April 19, 1975. India's first satellite launches on a Soviet rocket. 26-sided polygon. GN2 attitude control. India enters the space age. The 2-rupee coin will carry this moment forever.

July 18, 1980. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam leads SLV-3 to orbit. India becomes the 6th nation to launch its own satellite on its own rocket. The foundation of everything that follows.

Transported to its test site on a bullock cart. First Indian geostationary communications satellite. Ancestor of every GSAT and INSAT that followed.

First operational multipurpose geostationary satellite. TV relay, telephony, and meteorology in one spacecraft. Doordarshan reaches villages unreachable by terrestrial transmission.

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle makes its first attempt. Partial failure — but the vehicle that will become India's most reliable rocket, with 55+ consecutive successes, is born.

India's first ocean observation satellite. Phytoplankton maps. Sea surface temperature. The beginning of 25 years of continuous Indian Ocean monitoring.

140 million farm households. National crop monitoring begins. India's food security planning gains a satellite backbone.

GSAT-3. The world's first satellite dedicated entirely to education. Live interactive classrooms from a teacher in Bengaluru to students in Leh, Aizawl, and Port Blair simultaneously.

India's first lunar mission. M3 instrument discovers water on the Moon — one of the most important lunar findings since Apollo. India plants its flag on the Moon. The water discovery changes lunar science forever.

First Asian country to successfully reach and orbit Mars — and the only country in history to succeed on its first attempt. (ESA also succeeded on first attempt with Mars Express 2003, but as an intergovernmental organisation, not a single country.) Japan's Nozomi (1998) and China's Yinghuo-1 (2011) failed to orbit. India: first attempt, first success. ₹450 crore. 8 years of operation.

India's first multi-wavelength space observatory. 800+ papers. 20+ countries using data. Oldest UV light ever detected. 10+ years still active. India is doing frontier astrophysics.

PSLV-C37. February 15, 2017. 104 satellites in 28 minutes from 18 countries — including 88 Dove CubeSats from Planet Labs (USA) alone, the world's largest Earth-imaging constellation. India was the launch provider for one company's entire satellite batch. The world record that made the world pay attention. India is a tier-1 commercial launch nation.

Lander crashed. Orbiter survived and thrived. 7+ years active. Most detailed lunar water ice maps ever made. Failure that became a foundation for Chandrayaan-3's success.

August 23, 2023, 6:04 PM IST. Vikram lands. Pragyan rolls out. India is the first nation to land on the Moon's south pole — and the fourth nation ever to achieve a soft lunar landing. National Space Day born.

India's first solar observatory. First Indian spacecraft at a Lagrange point. 1.5 million km from Earth, watching the Sun 24/7. VELC at 1.05 solar radii. Space weather guardian.

January 1, 2024. India launches the world's second X-ray polarimetry observatory. POLIX. Thomson scattering. Black hole geometry. Raman Research Institute. India at the frontier of astrophysics.

January 24, 2025. GSLV-F15 carries NVS-02 to 111.75°E geosynchronous orbit. Second-generation NavIC satellite adds L1 band, indigenous atomic clocks, and replaces aging IRNSS-1E. NavIC now interoperable with every GPS receiver on Earth.

Early 2025. SDX01 and SDX02 dock in orbit. India joins USSR, USA, and China. NavIC relative navigation. Active-passive docking. The prerequisite for Chandrayaan-4 and BAS is proven.

$1.5 billion. 12m deployable mesh antenna. 80 TB/day. L-band (NASA) + S-band (ISRO). India as launch provider for NASA. Millimetre-precision surface deformation mapping every 12 days.

G1 uncrewed mission on the launch pad for late 2026. Crew module, abort system, and re-entry sequence all tested without crew. Vyommitra humanoid aboard. The final dress rehearsal before India sends humans to space.

First crewed Gaganyaan flight targeted for 2028. Four astronauts in training. Second batch (military + civilian STEM) selection begun early 2026. India joins the human spaceflight club — the beginning of everything that follows.

India's most complex mission. 5 modules. 2 LVM3 launches. Earth orbit docking + Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. ~3 kg samples from the south pole — first south pole samples in history. India becomes the 4th nation to return lunar samples.

India's first Venus mission. Aerobraking. VIRAL instrument (ISRO × Roscosmos × France). SAR radar through clouds. Phosphine investigation. India adds Venus to its interplanetary portfolio.

Avas core module launches. India begins assembling its own space station. 20 tonnes. 400 km orbit. Indigenous ECLSS. The permanent Indian home in space that Vikram Sarabhai dreamed of.

Bharatiya Antariksh Station fully assembled and crewed. India has a permanent presence in space — not a visitor to other nations' stations, but the host of its own. From a borrowed sounding rocket in 1963 to a space station in 2035. Seventy-two years. One unbroken will to reach.
